Bear on the Square Festival 4/18-19, 2015

The yearly celebration of the Southern Appalachian culture, including music, art and folkways. This year’s event will be the 19th annual and will be held, rain or shine.

Bear on the Square is a lively weekend of music and art beginning with pre-festival activities, including jamming on the square and a Country Auction, on Friday, April 18, 2015.

Saturday and Sunday’s schedule includes free admission, on-stage performances by well-known bluegrass and old-time musicians; a juried Artists Marketplace featuring mountain crafts; more jamming on the square; free music workshops/demonstrations; storytelling; an Acoustic Open Mic event; Master Classes for string musicians; a Gospel Jam; an old-time mountain dance and more.

Admission is free to all festival events, including the MainStage musical performances and the Artists Marketplace. The only exception is a small registration fee for Sunday’s Master Classes.

Bear on the Square was named the SouthEastern Bluegrass Association “Music Venue of the Year” in 2014. The National Storytelling Network has awarded Bear on the Square the designation as this year’s Southeastern Regional Spotlight for Storytelling.

The festival is produced each year by Bear on the Square Mountain Festival, Inc., composed of a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the culture of the Southern Appalachian region.

Holly Theater Celebration

Shenanigan’s Irish Pub New Year’s Eve Celebration

Music by Battlefield Collective combines the musical talents of Stephanie Caron and Evan Hart. A unique blend of bluegrass, Americana, roots, and rockabilly give the group an unmistakable and unique sound that is as full of energy as it is passion.

Touring the southeast, Battlefield Collective performs original material as well as their own arrangements of cover songs selected from top hits from the past sixty years. Energy and creativity set Battlefield Collective apart from the other bands, as well as their ability to be flexible and versatile.

Stephanie and Evan perform as a duo, but also frequently hire local musicians to create a fuller sound to match the needs for any venue or private event.

Montaluce Winery New Year’s Eve

December 31st the winery will be open all day from 11am to midnight for wine tastings, lunch and dinner. The dinner service will feature 2 menus. 1 menu for a-la-carte service and a special 8 Course Chef’s Tasting Menu with Wine Pairings.

Enjoy a live performance from the Fly Cats, a jazz quartet from Atlanta, from 9pm to midnight and they will be toasting in the New Year when the clock strikes 12.

Crimson Moon New Year’s Eve
Bluebilly Grit will be providing the musical entertainment.

HemlockFest is Coming in November 2014

HemlockFest, hosted by the Lumpkin Coalition, is an annual festival held the first full weekend in November. The Festival andHemlockFest2014_poster-672x1024 the proceeds from the festival are used to increase public awareness of Eastern and Carolina hemlock tree problems and to provide financial support for Area Colleges and Universities in their efforts to save the Hemlocks.

This is a worthwhile and entertaining event!

Hemlockfest happens November 7th,8th and 9th east of Dahlonega, Georgia at Starbridge and features many great live music events.

Shenanigans’ and Bourbon Street Grill provide great food while you listen to the live music (our son always helps with the cooking). Terrapin provides the beer (we loved the Wake and Bake they had last year).

Educational exhibits and cool art to purchase (we purchase something every year). Visit the silent auction tent with some great products (we offer a BOGO night for the inn every year).

On site festival camping is available if you purchase a 3 day pass or you can stay with us at the inn if we have something available. As of the day of this post (October 8th) we have both yurts and a room available (2 night minimum).

If you care about the environment and like live music this event should be on your list to attend. We try to make it Sunday when our guests check out.

Dahlonega Gold Rush Festival 10/18-10/19, 2014

Dahlonega’s popular Gold Rush Festival is happening this month when thousands come to see fall colors peaking and celebrate Dahlonega’s 1828 discovery of gold. Over 300 art and craft exhibitors gather around the Public Square and Historic District in support of this annual event, and it is estimated that a crowd of over 200,000 visit over the weekend.

The event has been voted one of the Top 20 Events in the southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society

The two-day event includes a parade, children’s activities, a fashion show, gold panning contest, wheelbarrow race, King and Queen Coronation, hog calling, buck dancing contest, gospel singing and other live entertainment, wrist wrestling, and last but not least – some delicious food.

Lodging is difficult to find but this does make for an interesting day trip for local residents and Atlantans’. Our inn is currently full for this event but if you want to explore lodging options visit the chamber web site at  dahlonega.org and click lodging link.

Dahlonega First Friday Night Concert Series Starts June 6, 2014

Come stay with us and attend The Dahlonega First Friday Night Free Concert on June 6 with 2 great bands!

Concert starts at 6:30 PM with Yahoola & BlueBilly Grit.

Opening the show will be Dahlonega’s Yahoola. Yahoola is widely known for their super harmony singing and their 10 year reputation for playing some of the best bluegrass in North Georgia.

Bear on the Square Festival Next Weekend

Next weekend is the 17th annual Bear on the Square Mountain Festival, a highly entertaining and lively weekend of music and art17BearLogo held in and around Dahlonega’s Historic Public Square.

Pre-festival events will occur on Friday, April 19, with the beginning of jamming on the Historic Public Square and the Live Country Auction that night.

On Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, there will be free admission on-stage performances by local, regional, and national musicians throughout the day in the MainStage Tent across from Hancock Park with a heavy emphasis on bluegrass and old-time music from the Southern Appalachian region.

A juried Artist Marketplace on the square, Saturday and Sunday, features traditional mountain crafts, and there will also be a Country Store at Hancock Park. More jamming on the square and music workshops on Saturday and Sunday, a Sunday morning Gospel Jam, a Saturday evening old-time Mountain Dance,  a Saturday Open Mic event, kids activities, and food complete the offerings.
